Using 802.11 at the Office

The process for setting up an 802.11b environment at the office or home is easier than you might think. If you have a cable modem at home or have a computer connected to a LAN in you corporation, you can simply purchase a few items and get a number of additional items connected to the internet.

You will need to acquire or you may already have an 802.11 Access Point. You can purchase models such as the Linksys Access Point. Be sure to purchase the model that has all the capabilities you require. If connecting other computers with Ethernet cards, be sure to get the version with the 4 Port Switch. Other version have a DSL Router. ALso be sure to purchase Ethernet cables as needed.

You will also need to purchase the 802.11 card to plug into the Zaurus or other device like a notebook. Remember the Zaurus uses the Compact Flash version where most notebooks will use the PC card version.

 
Step 1:
Setup the Access Point. You will find instructions in the box. Most Access Points require that you hold the reset button for about 3 seconds and then wait for the lights to turn green on the front of the Access Point.

Step 2:
Plug the Access Point into the appropriate connection on the cable modem, DSL, or LAN point.

Step 3:
If connecting computers to the Access Point, be sure they are off and then connect them to the Ports on teh back of teh Access Point. Then boot up the computer/s. You may be required to change settings in the Control Panel.

Step 4:
Setup the Zaurus to work with the Access Point. You will need to configure the Wireless LAN and the Network. (see the Tips and Tricks for setting up the Network and Wireless LAN)

Please be sure to read all documentation provided with the Access Point, computer, network, and 802.11 cards before connecting these devices.
