Software Update:
SL-5600 OS and Synchronization Software Update

This page provides complete instructions for downloading and installing the OS and Synchronization Software Update for the Zaurus SL-5600.

The supported operating systems for this update are as follows: Microsoft® Windows® 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional.

NOTES:

This Zaurus OS and PC Software update can only be applied to the SL-5600 with ROM version 1.00. To check your Zaurus ROM version number, go into the “Settings tab” on your Zaurus and click on the “System Info” icon. Open the “Version” tab and scroll down to the bottom of the screen for the version number.
The SL-5600 OS Update for Windows Users instructions requires proper installation of the Zaurus USB driver and Zaurus Communication Manager on the PC (these will be automatically installed when the Zaurus PC software is installed). Please note that the Update program will only work with the USB I/O (Default) PC Link setting, USB TCP/IP (Advanced) is not supported. For non-Windows Users, the Zaurus can also be updated using a memory card by following the instructions for Zaurus OS Update for Mac and Linux® Users below.
This update consists of two parts: SL-5600 OS update, and SL-5600 PC software update. Both the SL-5600 OS update and the SL-5600 PC Software should be updated together (i.e. an updated SL-5600 may not function properly with the non-upgraded PC synchronization software).
These downloads are for U.S. Zaurus models only!
This update is provided in a ZIP compressed file format and therefore will require a utility which can decompress the zip file format.

Summary of Changes

Improved automatic email hyperlinking when taping on email addresses in the Address book.
Improved support of sending email via synchronization with PC when a POP or IMAP email account is used in addition to the Synchronization account.
User can disable warning message when replying to email in the Synchronization Inbox folder.
Improved synchronization of emails with attachments that have international characters in the file name of the attachment.
Improved 802.11b ad-hoc network functionality.
The select key (center navigation button) provides play/pause functionality for MP3 playback.
Improved synchronization of categories with Qtopia Desktop.
Added filtering for synchronization of shortcuts as email attachments.

Installation Instructions

SL-5600 OS Update for Windows Users

1. Download the SL-5600 OS update file

Download the SL-5600 OS update file from the link below (560v132u.zip).

Unzip the compressed downloaded file to a directory

2. Backup your SL-5600 data
Warning: It is recommended that you backup your data to your PC or memory card before you begin the update.
Note: This step can be skipped if you do not have any data to backup

To backup the Zaurus data to your PC, follow the instructions in the Backup/Restore Application Manual (select Start / Programs / Sharp Zaurus 2 / Manuals / 5600BackupRestore.pdf on you PC).

To backup the Zaurus data to a memory card (CF or SD), follow the instructions in the SL-5600 Operation Manual (select Start / Programs / Sharp Zaurus 2 / Manuals / 5600OperationManual.pdf on your PC).

3. Update the Zaurus OS

Launch the Zaurus OS Update.exe application in the folder on the PC which contains the unzipped files from Step #1. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Step 1: Display the maintenance menu on the Zaurus

Exit all applications on the Zaurus and turn off the Zaurus.

Slide the battery cover switch to “REPLACE BATTERY”, remove the battery cover, wait 5 seconds and press the reset button (below the battery) with the stylus.

Replace the battery cover and slide the battery cover switch to “NORMAL OPERATION.”

While holding down the [OK] key, press [On/Off] /Cancel key and the maintenance screen will appear on the Zaurus.
Step 2: Connect the Zaurus to the PC

Place the Zaurus into the docking station, attach the AC power to the docking station,

Connect the docking station to the PC.
Step 3

Select [4. Update] from the Maintenance menu.

Select [1. USB] from the Update Menu

Select [Yes] on the confirmation screen. The Zaurus will reboot and the
"--- Zaurus USB Updater ---" will be displayed at the top of the screen.
Step 4

Select [Update] on the PC update application, and [Yes] on the confirmation screen.

The PC Update program will update the Zaurus OS and display a message when complete. Closing this window will reboot the Zaurus. The Zaurus OS update is now complete.

4. Update the PC Software

Download the SL-5600 PC Software update file from the link below (560v132s.zip).

Unzip the compressed downloaded file to a directory

Launch the Setup.exe application in the folder on the PC which contains the unzipped files. Select [Install PC Software].

The installation program will automatically detect the current version of the SL-5600 PC software and begin to uninstall it. Close all running applications and the Zaurus Manager by clicking on the Zaurus Manager in the System tray and select exit.

Follow the on-screen instructions to Remove the current version of the SL-5600 PC Software. Reboot the PC when prompted.

Re-Launch the Setup.exe application in the folder on the PC which contains the unzipped files. Select [Install PC Software] and follow the on-screen instructions for Installation. Reboot the PC when asked to.

Put the Zaurus in the Docking Station, connect it to the PC and configure Intellisync or Qtopia desktop with your personal preferences.

Zaurus OS Update for Mac and Linux® Users

1. Download the SL-5600 OS update file

Download the SL-5600 OS update file from the link below (560v132c.zip).

Unzip the compressed downloaded file to the root directory of a CF or SD card. Note: To be properly recognized by the Zaurus, the CF or SD card must be formatted with a FAT16 file format.

2. Backup your SL-5600 data
Warning: It is recommended that you backup your data before you begin this update.

Note: This step can be skipped if you do not require a backup

Exit all applications on the Zaurus and turn off the Zaurus.

Slide the battery cover switch to “REPLACE BATTERY”, remove the battery cover, wait 5 seconds and press the reset button (below the battery) with the stylus.

Replace the battery cover and slide the battery cover switch to “NORMAL OPERATION.”

While holding down the [OK] key, press [On/Off] /Cancel key and the maintenance screen will appear on the Zaurus.
Step 2:

Insert the CF or SD card into the respective slot on the Zaurus.

Connect the Zaurus to external AC power
Step 3:

Select [4. Update] from the Maintenance menu.

Select [2. CF] from the Update Menu if using CF card, or select [3. SD] if using SD card.

Select [Yes] on the confirmation screen. The Zaurus will reboot and the
"--- Zaurus CF Updater ---" will be displayed at the top of the screen. The Zaurus will reboot after the Zaurus OS update is complete.
