Software Upgrade:
SL-5500 v3 Zaurus OS and Synchronization Upgrade

This page provides complete instructions for downloading and installing the SL-5500 v3 Zaurus OS and Synchronization Software Upgrade.

The SL-5500 v3 Upgrade provides current SL-5500 users with the ability to experience the software provided on the recently released SL-5600 Zaurus. Key features of the SL-5500 v3 Upgrade include:

  • Faster and improved synchronization

  • Updated Email client with separate folders for each account
  • Opera 6.0 browser
  • Updated Address Book with user configurable column headings
  • Updated Calendar with additional new views and improved support for all-day and multi-day events

  • Integrated File manager (replaces Documents Tab)
  • Extended MP3 playback with display off feature
  • Backup/Restore the Zaurus with your PC



    Limitations
  • Due to changes in the Linux kernel, memory architecture, and libraries, third party applications which executed on the SL-5500 may not execute properly after the upgrade.
  • If you want to keep your PIM data you MUST synchronize your Zaurus using one of the sync software programs first. As stated below the Back Up and Restore program that saves you PIM data to CF or SD is not compatible so you MUST synchronize your data first.
  • Backup/Restore images from the original SL-5500 are not compatible with the new Backup/Restore application in the upgrade.
  • The new Address Book, Calendar, Todo and Email applications in the upgrade use a new PIM database which is not compatible with the database used in the SL-5500. Therefore, any third party applications which access the SL-5500 PIM database will not operate properly after the upgrade.
  • Currently there is no synchronization software for Linux and the new Upgrade ROM.

    The supported operating systems for this update are as follows: Microsoft® Windows® 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional.

    Notes:
    1. The SL-5500 v3 Upgrade may not be compatible with existing SL-5500 software or peripheral devices that function on the SL-5500. Sharp is working with application developers to update their programs so that they will operate properly on the SL-5500 v3 Update as well as the SL-5600. However, there is no guarantee that these applications will be updated.
    2. The instructions provided are based on proper installation of the Zaurus with a PC. The device drivers must be properly installed and the Zaurus must be able to communicate with the PC (must be able to synchronize or transfer files). If this condition is not met, the Zaurus can be upgraded via CF card (See Zaurus OS Upgrade for Mac and Linux® Users).
    3. For non-Windows Users, the Zaurus can also be updated using a memory card by following the instructions for Zaurus OS Update for Mac and Linux Users.
    4. This SL-5500 v3 Upgrade consists of two parts: SL-5500 System ROM upgrade, and PC software Upgrade. Both the SL-5500 and the PC must be upgraded together (i.e. the upgraded SL-5500 will not function properly with the non-upgraded PC synchronization software).
    5. The first synchronization may take long a long time to complete. This depends on the size of the data being synchronized.
    6. Disable any firewall software during the Upgrade of the Zaurus software. Certain firewall software products may prevent proper communication between the PC and the Zaurus during the Zaurus OS Upgrade. The firewall software can be re-enabled after the SL-5500 v3 Upgrade is complete.
    7. This update is provided in a ZIP compressed file format and therefore will require a utility which can decompress the zip file format.
    8. These downloads are for U.S. Zaurus models only!

    SL-5500 v3 Upgrade Instructions

    SL-5500 Zaurus OS and PC Synchronization Upgrade for Windows Users

    1. Download the SL-5500 v3 Upgrade zip file (below).

  • Unzip the downloaded file to a directory (5500v31u.zip)

    2. Synchronize your SL-5500 data

  • Warning: All applications and data will be lost during the v3 Upgrade process.
  • Note: This step can be skipped if you do not have any data to be backed up
  • Note: Do not use the Backup/Restore application on the SL-5500. The image files for the SL-5500 will not work with the Backup/Restore Application in the SL-5500 v3 Upgrade
  • Synchronize your PIM data (Address Book, Calendar, Todo, Email) using either Intellisync or Qtopia Desktop
  • Transfer your individual files on the Zaurus using File Transfer or Qtopia desktop

    3. Install the SL-5500 v3 Upgrade system ROM

  • Turn on the Zaurus and place in the docking station that is connected to the PC
  • Launch the setup.exe program in the directory which contains the unzipped files
  • Here you need to exit all SL-5500 software (Intellisync, Qtopia Desktop, by right-click the icon on the Windows system tray and click “Exit” on the popup menu.
  • Select the second button titled, “Install SL-5500 v3 System ROM” and follow the on screen instructions
  • After the ROM update is complete, perform a Full Reset by removing the battery cover and pressing the Full Reset button with your stylus, and complete the new welcome wizard on the SL-5500
  • Note: The Zaurus must be connected to AC power during the update of the System ROM.
  • Note: After the SL-5500 system ROM has been updated, do not dock the Zaurus to the PC until the end of step 4.

    4. Install the SL-5500 v3 Upgrade PC Software for MS Windows

  • Select the third button titled, “Install PC Software” in the SL-5500 v3 Installation window
  • Follow the on screen instructions for Installation. The Install Shield wizard will detect the currently installed SL-5500 PC Software and ask if you would like to un-install it. Select the uninstall of SL-5500 software and select “No” when asked to reboot the PC
  • Launch the SLZ1Uninstall.exe in the “USBDriver” directory in the directory which contains the unzipped files.
  • Follow the on screen instruction for uninstallation of USB driver. Then you must reboot the PC.
  • After the PC reboots, launch the setup.exe program in the directory which contains the unzipped files and select the third button again.
  • Follow the on screen instructions for Installation. Reboot the PC when asked to.
  • Dock the Zaurus to the PC and follow the instructions to install the new USB driver “SL Series (WDM)” on the PC.
    Note: If the USB driver installation fails, undock the Zaurus and launch SLZ1Uninstall.exe again to uninstall the USB driver completely.
  • Configure Intellsync or Qtopia desktop with your personal preferences.

    5. Install Additional software for Zaurus

  • Dock the Zaurus to the PC
  • Launch the Zaurus File Transfer application
  • Launch the setup.exe program in the directory which contains the unzipped files and select “Install Additional software for Zaurus” button.
  • Copy the desired software package files to the Zaurus using the Zaurus File Transfer program
  • Use the Add/Remove Software program on the Zaurus to install the transferred applications
  • Note: After installation, you can delete the package files on the Zaurus using the File Transfer program.

    6. Synchronize Previous SL-5500 data

  • Note: This step can be skipped if you did not synchronize or copyany data in step #2
  • Synchronize your PIM data (Address Book, Calendar, Todo, Email) using either Intellisync or Qtopia Desktop
  • Transfer your individual files on the Zaurus File Transfer or Qtopia desktop

    Zaurus OS Upgrade for Mac and Linux® Users

    1. Download the SL-5500 v3 Upgrade zip file (below).

  • Unzip the downloaded file to a directory (5500v31c.zip)
  • Copy the Ospack file from the unzipped files to the root directory of a CF card.
  • Note: The CF card must contain a FAT16 format to be properly recognized by the Zaurus.

    2. Synchronize your SL-5500 data

  • Warning: All applications and data will be lost during the v3 Upgrade process.
  • Note: This step can be skipped if you do not have any data to be backed up
  • Note: The backup/restore image files for the SL-5500 will not work with the SL-5500 v3 Upgrade
  • Copy documents and files to a CF or SD card using the File Manager application (application must be installed from the on SL-5500 CDROM)
  • Note: Linux users can backup PIM data by synchronization with Qtopia desktop for Linux. Qtopia Desktop for Linux can be downloaded from the Trolltech site. However, there is no current synchronization between Qtopia Desktop for Linux and the Zaurus v3 Upgrade at this time. Therefore, the PIM data can be backed up only but not restored after the v3 Upgrade.

    3. Perform the system ROM update.

  • Insert the CF card into the CF slot on the Zaurus.
  • Connect the AC adapter to the Zaurus and verify that power is supplied. WARNING: THE AC ADAPTER MUST BE USED THROUGHT THE SYSTEM ROM UPDATE. If the AC adapter is not used, the device may not perform as expected.
  • Open the battery compartment lid but do not remove the battery.
  • While pressing the [C] and [D] keys, push the “FULL RESET” button once (using the stylus tip). The “FULL RESET” button is located on the lower right side of the battery compartment. When successfully pressed, the green LED (with “mail” symbol icon) and orange LED (with “battery” symbol print) will turn on. When these LEDs are turned on, the system ROM updated is in progress.
  • WARNING: DO NOT ABORT, or UNPLUG THE AC ADAPTER WHILE THE LEDs ARE ON. Aborting or unplugging AC adapter during the update may cause fault, or damage affecting the Zaurus.
  • After approximately 3 minutes, the green LED will turn off. After the LED turns off, perform a Full Reset by pushing the “FULL RESET” button using the stylus tip.
  • Note: After the ROM update (the LED turns off), but prior to performing a FULL RESET, the Zaurus may display scrolling text messages. Ignore these text messages and perform a FULL RESET.
  • Restore the battery door and slide the battery replacement switch to “Normal Operation”

    4. Install Additional software for Zaurus

  • Copy the desired software package files to a CF or SD card (memory cards must have the FAT16 file system to be properly recognized by the Zaurus).
  • Insert the memory card into the appropriate slot on the Zaurus.
  • Use the Add/Remove Software program on the Zaurus to install the transferred applications.

    5. Synchronize Previous SL-5500 data

  • Note: This step can be skipped if you did not synchronize any data in step #2
  • Restore any data or files that were backed up in Step #2.




    Returning to the SL-5500 Zaurus and PC Synchronization Software

    Only follow these instructions in the event that you are not satisfied with the upgrade and wish to return to the SL-5500 software and PC Synchronization software.

    1. Uninstall the Zaurus PC Synchronization Software and Drivers
  • Uninstall the Sharp Zaurus Software on the PC by the using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel
  • Uninstall the Sharp Zaurus drivers by executing SLZ1Uninstall.exe (the default location for this file is C:\Program Files\Sharp Zaurus2\drivers).
  • Copy the Ospack file from the unzipped files to the root directory of a CF card.
  • Reboot the PC.


    • 2. Install the SL-5500 ROM and Synchronization Software
  • Install the SL-5500 system ROM by following the instructions at the following link. Follow the instructions for System ROM Update for MAC and Linux Users (Note: These instructions require using a CF card).
  • Install the SL-5500 drivers and synchronization software by following the instructions at the following link.
